The encyclopedia was fortunate to be completed in a difficult historical period, despite financial difficulties and a lack of active public support. The encyclopedia was sponsored by Baron David Horacievich Hinzburg, an Oriental scholar and public figure from a family of Jewish bankers and philanthropists.
