Venevitinov became director of Moscow's Rumyantsev Museum, a unique collection of books, manuscripts, ethnographic and other collections. In 1897 (in honor of the bicentennial), his study of the Russian visit to Holland during the Great Embassy of 1697-1698 was published. The impetus for writing this work was a book (1812) by Jean Meerman, a representative of one of The Hague's esteemed families, about Peter the First's visit to Holland.
