Davydenko 1884 IV + 457 + XV page Petrov was a conscientious collector of historical and literary material, his Essays on History (1884) were a critical source for his time and became the starting point of a new page in Ukrainian literature at the end of the nineteenth century. Petrov did not study Ukrainian literature in passing, but devoted virtually his entire scientific life to it. He also published Essays from the history of Ukrainian literature in the seventeenth-eighteenth centuries (1911) and thus showed that he was interested not only in the period of Ukrainian literature (i.e. new literature), but also in its origins, its ancient periods and less studied phenomena.
