He visited Russia twice (1773-1774 and 1776-1777), established and maintained long-standing trusting relations with Catherine II and some other members of the Russian elite, and the private correspondence between Catherine II and Grimm (430 letters from 1764 to 1796) is rightly considered an authentic epistolary monument of his time.
