His name has become one of the brightest music critics of his time. In 1856 alone, he wrote more than sixty musicological works, including The Music of Southern Russian Songs (accompanied by his own harmonies of six Ukrainian folk songs), one of the first scientific studies in Russian musicology on folk creativity.
