In 1891, a magnificent book by the Russian historian Ivan Platonovich Barsukov was published in Moscow, dedicated to Count Nikolai Nikolaevich Muravyevich-Amursky, a prominent statesman of the nineteenth century and governor-general of Eastern Siberia. Muravyev-Amursky's name went down in history because of his successful work in expanding the Russian Empire eastward. He peacefully returned to Russia Amur, which was ceded to China in 1689, and under his leadership the active settlement of new lands by the Russian people.
