He received his higher education at the Law Faculty of Kazan University; served in the Chancellery of the Ministry of Finance, then in the State Archives. His well-known works - Science and Literature under Peter the Great (1862) and History of the Academy of Sciences (Vol. I and II, 1870-1873).
