Short description: He was born in Spain into a communist family, orphaned during the Spanish Civil War and brought to the Soviet Union; his name and date of birth were given in 1937 by his adoptive parents. He studied at the Childrens Music School of the Moscow Conservatory (1940-1944), at the Childrens Art School of the Krasnopresnensky District of Moscow (1944-1950), at the Moscow Polygraphic Institute (1950-1955), at the Faculty of Artistic and Technical Design of Print Production under A. D. Goncharov, I. I. Chekmazov, G. Zakharov; he took advice from A. I. Usachev. In 1955, he completed his diploma work on illustrations for the stories of R.
