The ancient folk tale of Reinek-Lees was given a new lease of life by a talented literary translation by J.-W. Goethe. Wilhelm von Kaulbach (1805-1874), a famous painter and graphic artist, one of the most important representatives of German historical painting, a monumentalist who painted the walls of the Pinakoteca in Munich and the front staircase of the New Museum in Berlin.
