Historically, the church had important spiritual significance for the Highlanders, and its location near the Georgian-Military Road made it a prominent landmark and a place of prayer for travelers and the military. The Georgian-Military Road connecting Tbilisi with the northern Caucasus and Russia has been an important strategic route since the eighteenth century and has been used extensively for military and commercial purposes.
