Description:
In Russian. Short description: Н. I. Storozhenko, Shakespeare in the Translation and Explanation by A. L. Sokolovsky (Complete Works in 8 Volumes in 4 Books), Published by A. F. Marx, 1894-1898. The first edition of Shakespeares collected works in Russian translation appeared in 1841, translated by N. Ketcher. In 1865-1868, N. A. Nekrasov and N. V. Gerbel published their own version of Shakespeares works. For this edition, they invited the then relatively unknown translator Alexander Lukich Sokolovsky. He translated twelve plays for this edition. Sokolovsky became so engrossed in the work that it became a lifelong endeavor for him. Later, Sokolovsky was involved in the publication of works by Byron, Goethe, and Hoffmann. In the 1870s, A. L. Sokolovsky returned to his long-standing idea of producing a complete Russian translation of Shakespeare on his own. Shakespeare in the Translation and Explanation by A. L. Sokolovsky was published in 1898 in 8 volumes. The translation is accompanied by extensive historical and critical essays on each play and numerous explanatory notes. This edition received high praise from contemporaries. In 1901, the Petersburg Academy of Sciences awarded Sokolovsky the complete Pushkin Prize.
