This translation is not from the original English edition, published in New York in 1888, but from the French translation that appeared in Paris in 1901-1902. This is because the French edition contains some additions and changes not present in the English one. Like the French edition, the Russian one includes a brief historiographical essay by Paul Frederic, a professor at the University of Ghent. The first two volumes of the book by American researcher Henry Charles Lea (1825-1909), based on extensive documentary material, describe the origins and activities of the Inquisition in the Middle Ages. The pages of the publication vividly depict famous trials involving Jan Hus, Savonarola, Joan of Arc, Grand Master of the Templars Jacques de Molay, "Bluebeard" Gilles de Rais, and others. The story of Gilles de Rais, executed on charges of numerous murders and described in The History of the Inquisition, served as the prototype for the character of "Bluebeard" in the French folk tale. The third volume is entirely dedicated to the history of the Spanish Inquisition (S.G. Lozinsky). This volume covers a period of 350 years, from 1480 to 1830, and characterizes the activities of the Inquisition in the modern era.
